  • IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
  • TOEFL (paper based): Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575
  • TOEFL (internet based): Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, total score of 90

For Postgraduate (Masters) level admission:

  • IELTS: an overall mark of 7.0 and no section below 6
  • TOEFL (paper based): an overall mark of 7.0 and no section below 6
  • TOEFL (internet based): Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, total score of 100

For Postgraduate (PhD) level admissions:

Ques­tions and answers about resi­dence permit for studies

 

If you have a tuition fee, the fee must be paid immediately. A residence permit cannot be issued to you until you have paid your tuition fee. This is because according to the Swedish Migration Agency, you are not considered to be finally admitted until you pay your tuition fee.

 

If you are allowed to take a holiday from your studies and there is no other reason for you to remain in Sweden, your study residence permit may be cancelled.

Even if your residence permit is not revoked by the Migration Agency, it’s important to note that this potential study break doesn’t mean that you’ll be exempt from the requirements to apply for a long-term residence permit for your studies. Instead, you’ll need to prove that you’ve completed enough credits if you’re applying for an extended stay permit.

 

As a general rule, you must study in Sweden corresponding to 30 credits per semester. There are some exceptions:

  • Exceptions can be made in some cases for those who:
    • have previously had a residence permit to study a preparatory course and then apply for a permit to continue Study in Sweden at an education related to the preparatory course.
    • have completed an education by the end of the spring term, and will continue to study on a new education at the beginning of the autumn term
  • Exceptions to the requirement for full-time studies can also be made if you have had a residence permit for the ordinary study period and need to apply for an extended permit to complete your studies outside the ordinary study period.

If you are staying in Sweden for less than 3 months, you do not need a residence permit. Instead, you need a visa. In some countries, you can stay for up to 3 months without a permit or visa, and you are allowed to Study in Sweden during this time.

There are no barriers to leaving Sweden. However, if your previous residence permit has expired and your new residence permit is pending, you run the risk of being refused entry into Sweden if you’re outside the Swedish borders. So, if you are planning to study in Sweden, you’ll always have to balance the risk of not receiving a decision in time with the need to travel outside Sweden. It’s also important to note that priority is no longer given by the Swedish Migration Agency.

Information about how long it has taken to receive a decision from the Swedish Migration Agency in previous cases

If you travel outside Sweden while your permit is expiring and you apply for an extension, you may not be able to return to Sweden until your new permit is issued. You may then have to wait outside Sweden for your new permit decision.

If you need to go back to Sweden for urgent reasons before that, you can apply for a National Entry Visa. With a National Entry Visa, you can go back to Sweden to wait for your extension decision. You can apply for an Entry Visa at a Swedish Embassy or Consulate-General in your country of residence, as long as the authority issues the entry visa. Please note that a National Entry Visa application requires that special grounds be provided for issuing the entry visa. The Swedish Migration Agency has no control over how the Embassy or Consulate decides in the national entry visa application. Therefore, you should only leave Sweden during processing time if you really need to. For example, you may need a certificate that explains the reason for your trip. For example, you may have to go back for urgent reasons such as sudden illness in your family, death in your family or important work assignments. You should also note that you cannot appeal a decision on an entry visa.

 

One of the requirements for a residence permit is that the studies must take place in Sweden. If you’re planning to travel abroad for an exchange period, you’ll need to contact the authorities of your destination country to see what the requirements are for staying there. You’ll also need to contact the unit at Swedish Migration Agency that issued your residence permit.

If you travel abroad during your current permit period, your residence permit is no longer valid and may be revoked. If your residence permit is revoked, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll have a harder time applying for a new one when you return to Sweden to pursue your studies. However, you’ll need to apply for the new permit as soon as possible. You can’t return to Sweden without having the new permit.

There are a couple of exceptions. According to the Swedish Migration Agency’s practice, doctoral students can have an arrangement for stay abroad that can form the basis for studies abroad during certain periods. No,It is not necessary for your residence permit to be revoked if you are absent from Sweden for the summer holidays. However, if your planned leave is to take place during the spring and autumn semesters when you are scheduled to attend your studies in Sweden, then there is a potential risk of your permit being revoked.

 

Ques­tions and answers about doctoral studies

 

If you are a doctoral student who has not been admitted to study in Sweden but has been invited to study in Sweden or to conduct research in Sweden in the context of an education abroad, you are not eligible for a study permit. Instead, you can apply for a visitor’s residence permit. Please note that visitor’s residence permits are valid for a maximum of one year.

If you are qualified to be a part of a doctoral programme and are selected to conduct research in Sweden, you can apply for a residence permit as a guest researcher.

Yes, you can. There is no requirement for the bank statement to be from a specific country. The extract should be issued in English or Swedish, or be translated into one of these languages.

 

It is sufficient if the bank document shows the account balance in the form of cash and cash equivalents, balance date, name of account holder, currency and bank name. Account history is not required, but the Swedish Migration Agency may request account history if necessary in the handling of your case.

 

If you are applying for a first residence permit for studies and are planning to support yourself with your own bank assets, you must submit your application no earlier than four months before the date from which you are applying for a residence permit. This is so that you will be able to show that you can support yourself in close connection with the beginning of the period of Study in Sweden and so that your documents will not become too old. This does not apply if you will be receiving continuous income, such as a scholarship.

Own bank assets means that you have money in an account that belongs to you and that only you and your possible spouse can withdraw money from it. If you are under the age of 18, your guardians’ accounts may also apply as a basis for your maintenance. Credit, funds or shares do not count as own bank assets.

 

When you apply for an extension of your residence permit for studies and there is still time left on your current residence permit, you need to show that you are able to support yourself for the remaining period of your current permit as well as the new permit period that you apply for. So you must show that you have maintenance from the balance date up until the end date of the requested extension permit
