Geography
Greece is located in south-eastern Europe, at the meeting point of three seas: the Ionian Sea to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Aegean Sea to the east.
Greece’s Archipelago covers 7,500 km of the country’s 16,000 km of coastline, and it’s home to a wide variety of beaches, from sandy and pebble to sheltered bays, coves, and caves with steep rocks. It’s also home to dark sand, typical of volcanic soil, and coastal wetlands.
The Aegean is home to the majority of Greece’s islands. Greece’s islands are divided into the following seven groups: northeast Aegean islands, southern Sporades islands, eastern Evia islands, mainland Peninsular islands (Argosaronic islands), eastern Cyclades (group of 56 islands) islands, Dodecanous islands and Crete islands.
After the Aegean lies the Ionian Sea, where the main islands stretch from north to south, from Corfu to Lefkada to Ithaca, and from Kefallonia to Zakynthos. Kythira is located in the south of the peninsular part of Greece.
Climate
Greece has one of the warmest summers in Europe, with April through October being the best times to visit. In the south, temperatures can be up to 4 degrees warmer than in the north.
Greece’s climate is Mediterranean, with lots of sun, cool weather and not too much rain. It’s got a lot of different weather because of where it is, how rugged it is and how it’s spread out between land and sea.
In summer, the dry hot days are cooled by seasonal winds called the meltemi, while mountainous regions have generally lower temperatures.
In lowland areas, winters are pretty mild, with little snow and ice, but mountains are usually covered in snow. It’s also common to see different weather patterns during the same season, like mild heat in the coast and cool temperatures in the mountains.
History
The first evidence of human habitation dates back to about 11,000 to 3,000 BC. During the bronze age (3,000 to 1,200 BC), the advanced Greek civilisations of Cyclades, Minoans, Mycenaeans and Macedonians thrived. A dark age followed, marked by invasions. From the 6th century BC to the 4th century BC, Greece experienced a period of cultural and literary revival known as the classical period, or the Golden Age. This period was marked by a prolonged period of internal conflict and power struggles. The Peloponnesus War (431–404 BC) between the Spartans and the Athenians was a major turning point in the history of Greece. Both were later eclipsed by Macedonia under the rule of the twenty-year-old King Alexander, who unites the Greek kingdoms in Asia Minor and conquers Persia, Egypt and India (hence the name Hellenistic Age). By this time, Alexander had achieved the status of Alexander the Great.
Roman invasions reached Greece in 205 BC, and by 146 BC, Greece and Macedonia had become Roman provinces. After the Roman Empire divided into Eastern and Western realms in 395 AD, the city of Constantinople pledged its loyalty to Greece, ushering in the legendary Byzantine age, which laid the foundations of Orthodox Christianity. By 1500, almost all of Greece fell to the Ottoman Turks. In the nineteenth century, with the Ottoman Empire on the brink of collapse, the Greeks fought a war of independence (1821–1832) in which Britain, France, and Russia intervened. In 1866, Otto of Bavaria was installed as King of Greece. His ambition, known as The Great Idea, called for the reunification of all the Greek lands into the Greek motherland. In 1868, he was peacefully deposed and the Greeks elected as their king, George I of Denmark, a Danish prince.
During World War I, Greece’s prime minister, Constantine IV (Venizelos), allied Greece with France and Great Britain, which led to King Constantine’s (Constantin’s) departure from the country. Constantine’s wife, the Kaiser’s sister Sophia, was married to Constantine’s son. After the war, the Great Idea was revived, and Constantine IV sent troops to take the port city of Smyrna, which at the time had a Greek majority, from the Ottoman province of Izmir (modern-day Turkey). The army was defeated, and in 1923, the two countries engaged in a brutal exchange of population.
By 1930, Constantine’s son, General Metaxas, had been restored to the throne. In 1940, Metaxas refused to let Mussolini’s Italian troops cross Greece, placing Greece on the Allied side. In 1941, the country fell to Germany, and resistance movements erupted, dividing the country into royalist and communist factions. The result was a civil war that lasted until 1949, leaving the country in turmoil. Political instability followed, and in 1967, King Constantine abdicated and fled the country. He was succeeded by his son, Constantine II, who lived through a period of brutalization and reprisals under a US-backed regime of the Colonels. After an assassination attempt on the leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, was foiled, he was replaced by convicted killer Nicos Samson. In 1974, the regime collapsed, and the country became a republic under the New Democrat Party (NDP). The continued occupation of North Cyprus remains one of Greece’s most controversial issues.
In 1981 Greece entered the European Community.
Politics and Government
Democrat Greece is a parliamentary republic since 1975. The President is the head of state and is elected for a term of five years. The President and the 300-strong parliament have joint legislative powers. The government consists of a Prime Minister and 22 cabinet members.
The Greek two-party system is dominated by the liberal-conservative New Democracy (ND) and the social-democratic Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). Other significant parties include the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) and the Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS).
The geographical area of Greece is subdivided into regions and groups of islands. The mainland regions of Greece comprise Central Greece (stereoeladha) (including Epiros), Macedonia (Macedonia, Skopje and Skopje), Thessaly (Thessaly) and Thrace.

Economy
Greece was traditionally an agricultural nation, but this is no longer the case. Tourism is Greece’s largest industry, while shipping accounts for 4.5% of GDP. Greece owns the largest maritime fleet in the world (3,079 vessels) with 18% of the world’s fleet capacity.
Per capita income in Greece is the lowest of all the EC Member States except for Portugal. Greece was hit hard by the financial crisis in the late 2000s; high public expenditure and high levels of tax evasion, combined with a credit crunch and recession, left the country drowning in debt.
Fearing defaults on debt payments, the eurozone countries have agreed on aid packages worth billions of euros to rescue Greece’s economy. This has led to huge cuts in public spending and tax increases, prompting fears of social unrest and instability.
Tourism
Tourism accounts for a significant share of the Greek economy. In 2009 alone, Greece hosted more than 19.3m tourists. In 2011, Santourgis was voted ‘the world’s best island’ by Travel and Leisure Magazine. The neighbouring island of Mycenaeum came in 5th.

Delphi is located in the middle of Greece, on the top of Mount Parnassus, looking out over the Corinth Bay. It was thought to be the center of the world by the ancient Greeks, and its biggest building – the Temple of Apollo – was said to be the most powerful oracle, used by royalty, warlords, politicians and travelers during the nine hottest months of the year.
Knossos The largest of Crete’s Minoan sites, Knossos was discovered in 1900 by the British archeologist Sir Arthur Janes (1851–1941) who spent a large sum of money reconstructing several of the buildings on the site. Knossos is a 22,000 m2 palace that served as a royal residence as well as a political and ceremonial center of Minoan society. The complex consists of courtyards and banquet rooms, as well as private living, religious and storage rooms.
The 5th century BC saw the rebuilding of the Acropolis during the golden age of Athens. The temple of Athena Nike is located south of the entrance to the Acropolis. It was built in honour of Athena, the patron of the city. The temple was dedicated to Athena after the defeat of the Persians by the Greeks in the Trojan War. Completed in 438 BC, the Parthenon is located on the Acropolis.

The crime rate in Greece is one of the lowest in the European Union, but while violent crime is rare, petty theft, car theft and burglaries are on the rise, mostly in central Athens.

The Degree Levels
At the first level of the university, the undergraduate degrees will be offered to students, which are commonly referred to as the “Ptychio” degrees. The undergraduate program is usually four years in length, but in some specific or professional fields, such as medicine and engineering, the duration can be up to five years, and in medical doctor programs, it can be more than twelve years. In these study programs, students have the option to choose some electives in addition to their mandatory courses. After a bachelor’s degree, students may continue their studies to pursue a master’s degree. In Greece, the education system permits some part-time work for students.
The second stage means entry into the first level of postgraduate studies. This will take a minimum of two years to complete and the student then achieves the Metaptychiako Díploma Exidíkefsis, (Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization).

The postgraduate studies provide students with the option to specialize in their relevant academic field. The master courses are available for both national and foreign students, especially who graduates from Greek higher education institutes or accredited equivalent institutes from abroad. Generally, most masters programs begin in autumn, therefore, deadlines for application lie in May-July. Master’s degrees take two years to complete. PhD Courses and Requirements For Greece Universities
A third-cycle study program leads to a Ph D degree. The policies of admission are the same as the academic system adopted across Europe through the Bologna Process.
Greece Tertiary education is divided into four scientific fields: Humanities, Law and Social Sciences; Natural and Technological Sciences; Health and Life Sciences and Sciences of Economy and Informatics.
Types of PhD in Greece
There are two types of PhD degrees awarded in Greece,
Traditional PhD program is a 3-year pure research period with no teaching or lectures
American system PhD program” It is a Masters turned PhD program which takes 4-5 years to complete. In this program, students have to attend lectures and seminars for one year
The traditional PhD program is more common. Students generally apply with a research proposal with their own project ideas.
PhD Program Duration
The Greek academic year for PhD programs runs for a full –year that is from September to August. The academic year comprises two semesters.
According to the European Bologna Process System, the minimum length to complete a PhD program is 3-years full-time.
However, this period of PhD varies significantly depending upon r academic departments And field of Study in Greece. Technical and Applied Science subjects take 3-years to complete, while 4-6 years are required to complete a PhD degree in Social Sciences and Arts.
The PhD process in Greece Institutes
In the “American system,” PhD programs lectures and seminars are conducted in the first year rendering a masters degree. The research project will begin in the second year. Your research project is not completed without the submission of a thesis.

For the “American system” PhD programs within Greece, you will spend the first three years completing lectures and seminars related to your research. In the second year of the PhD program, the research project will begin, with the first year being similar to a Masters course, awarding a Masters qualification. The research project is however concluded after the submission of a thesis.
Moreover, in a traditional PhD program, students will focus on their research and will spend the 3-years in completion of the thesis.
A relevant supervisor is appointed for each doctoral candidate. The supervisor will guide the student about thesis writing. This supervisor will be one of three members of the Academic Advisory Committee appointed for the assessment processes of the student’s PhD.
Generally, Non-EU students, who are not admitted on a scholarship program, have to pay around €1,500 per year as PhD tuition fee
