Admissions Requirements of Chinese Universities for Students

For Students Visa Requirements of Study in China

You will receive an offer letter after having fulfilled the admission requirements and securing a seat in Chinese University.Your next step is to go to the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate in your country and get the student visa of China information firsthand. You will be given a student visa application along with a list of documents to submit with your application at the embassy. There are two types of student visa depending on the length of your study programme. The first type is called X1 visa for study programmes of longer duration than 6 months and the second type is called X2 visa for studies of shorter duration than 6 months. You will be charged 600 USD for visa application and will need to submit the following documents:

  • Valid Passport
  • Offer Letter of Hosting Chinese University
  • Medical Examination Certificate
  • Language Proficiency Test Certificate
  • Completed Visa Application

You must apply for a student visa and submit your visa application and necessary documents one month prior to the commencement of your study program in China. Your student visa process is expected to be completed within one to two weeks. Upon arrival in China, you will be able to apply for a temporary resident permit within 30 days of your arrival in China. This permit will remain valid until the end of your study program. You can apply for your temporary resident permit at the local public security bureau (PBS).

 

Permanent Residency of China Requirements for Students

The path to permanent residency in China starts with the points-based immigration system. Upon graduation from China, students are eligible to apply for a Tier A visa, Tier B visa, and Tier C visa. Each visa type has different qualification, professional requirements, and visa validity requirements. Doctorate of Philosophy (DG) holders receive 20 points. Masters Degree (MSc) holders receive 15 points. Bachelors (Bachelors) degree holders receive 10 points. Work experience in China of 3 to 6 months receives 5 points. Work experience in China of 6 to 9 months receives 10 points. Over 9 months receives 15 points. Age groups (18 to 25 years) receive 10 points, age groups (26 to 45 years) receive 15 points, and age groups (46 to 55) receive 10 points. An additional 5 points are added for qualification obtained from world recognized institutes. Academic Requirements for Students to Get Admission in Chines Universities

  • For admission in Under Graduate programme, Applicants must have completed an A-Level (High School Diploma) or equivalent from a recognised institution in their country. Your selected Chinese institution may conduct an entrance test to evaluate your aptitude and passing the entrance test in good marks will confirm your admission. GCSE Holders are not admitted to Chinese universities for Under Graduate courses. First, they will be admitted in foundation course for 1 year. After that, they will be accepted for Under Graduate study program.
  • For admission in post graduate (Masters) programme, Applicants must have completed their Bachelors degree from a well-known university in their country with good marks. Admission in many Chinese universities is also a requirement, which you will need to know before selecting a Chinese university. Applicant will need to provide 2 recommendation letters from his/her 2 professors.
  • For admission in post graduate (PhD) programme, Applicants must have completed their Masters degree from a well-known institution of their country in good repute. They will be required to provide two recommendation letters from their respective professors. The Chinese Institute you will be studying at may also conduct an entrance examination in which you will be required to pass with good repute.

Language Requirements:

In all of the Chinese universities, Chinese language is the medium of instruction. However, many Chinese universities are providing study programmes in English, which you need to know before choosing a study programme. Even if you decide to study in English, you will need to have some command over the Chinese language if you want to live in China, and you will eventually learn it during your stay in China. For Admission in Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses, the English Proficiency Test Certificates accepted by Chinese Universities are IELTS and TOEFL and for admission in study programmes with Chinese as medium of instruction you will have to pass Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) test. There are three levels of HSK test difficulty. The levels are primary, medium and advanced. The level of HSK test depends on the study programme and the academic level. You will prepare for HSK test according to your study programme. For example, for science, engineering and IT courses in Chinese language, you will need to take HSK elementary test. For liberal arts, economics and management courses in Chinese language HSK intermediate test will be required.

Method of Application

International students can apply directly to their preferred Chinese university through the official website, or they can select one of the two following methods:

  • CUCAS Application Method: – CUCAS is the online application platform that acts as the middleman between the applicant and the Chinese Universities for the admissions process. You can apply at your selected Chinese University using CUCAS.
  • CUAC Application Method: – China University Application Centre (CUAC), also known as China University Application Center (CUAC), is an online platform that acts as a middleman between Chinese universities and international applicants. CUAC also provides professional advice on course selection in China universities to applicants.

Submitting Required Documents

The documents required may differ from one Chinese university to another and also depend on your level of study in China and study program. In the case of international students, the documents required correspond to the visa documents and the national identity of the international student. In general, all of Chinese Universities require the following documents for admission of international students:

  • 2 recent passport size photographs of applicant
  • A photocopy of applicant’s valid national passport
  • Photocopy of National Identity Card
  • Health Certificate (proving the applicant is in good health)
  • Clearance letter from local police station proving the applicant has good character and has no criminal offence registered against him
  • Language proficiency test certificate (for English taught courses IELTS and TOEFL for Chinese language taught courses HSK)
  • A letter of guarantee( signed by the guardian or parents of the applicant stating that the applicant will abide all the rules and regulations of Chinese government during his stay in China and stating that the guardian take responsibility of the actions of the applicant)

  • Transcripts of your academic records, diplomas  and certificates
  • Recommendation letters from two of applicant’s professors (for post graduate courses)
  • You must meet age requirement if the course
  • Letter of intent (written by applicant stating why he has chosen certain study programme and explaining his/her professional aspirations)

Admission Submission Deadlines

The academic year in China is divided into two semesters: the spring semester and the autumn semester. Some universities in China have a three-semester admission schedule. Therefore, it is better to know the admission dates of your preferred Chinese universities before planning your admission timetable. Generally, the admission submission dates of most Chinese universities follow the following schedule:

  • For admission in spring semester the application must be submitted till 15th of July
  • For admission in autumn semester the application must be submitted till 30th of April

Waiting for Admission Approval

When you submit the necessary documents and the admission form, the admission process will take 30-40 days. If the Chinese university approves your application, you will receive an acceptance letter (acceptance letter) or an offer letter (offer letter) from the Chinese university.
