Admission Requirements in Universities of Cyprus for Students 2023

Unlike other EU countries, admission to universities in Cyprus is not as tough and competitive. Students are not required to have ELLT certificate in order to be admitted in English taught courses. Students can take IELTS or TOEFL, or they can take ELLT at Cyprus University. If students choose ELLT, they will take ELLT exam upon arrival in Cyprus, and they are required to achieve a minimum C grade in ELLT. There are no entrance examinations or interviews in Cyprus universities, but students need to know the requirements of their chosen Cyprus university.

  • For admissions in under graduate study programme the students must have passed their higher secondary school diploma with at least C grades

  • For post graduate (Masters) admission C grade in Bachelors degree and the subject wise minimum grades requirements will be specified by University that can be different for each study programme.

  • For admission in post graduate (PhD) study programme, Bachelors degree, Masters Degree with at least C Grade attained from a recognized university of applicant’s country, recommendation letters, updated CV, research proposal and letter of intent. Interview is taken for mostly PhD admissions in Cyprus.

You can apply directly at the university’s website. Most universities will process your admission application within 4-6 weeks and let you know how it’s going. You’ll have to pay 53 euros with your admission application, and the fee won’t be refundable. The deadline for submission varies from university to university, so you’ll need to know when the intake deadline is and make sure your documents are up to date.

Cypriot Student Visa Requirements 2023 for Students

After receiving the letter of acceptance from the University of Cyprus, the student visa process begins. Students have the choice to apply for a Cyprus student visa through their University in Cyprus or to submit the application directly at the Cypriot Embassy in their home country. Documents required for the student visa of Cyprus should be prepared at least two to three months prior to the start of the study programme at the University of Cyprus. Because the visa processing time at the Embassy is usually two to three months. Document requirements may differ depending on the country of the applicant.; in general the following documents are required for student visa of Cyprus: 

  • Transcripts of academic records I-e degrees, certificates, diplomas (all degrees and certificates will be attested by granting authority with their stamp and the notary stamp of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the Cyprus Consulate will be required at the back of each document)

  • English Proficiency Test Certificate (if applicable)

  • Clearance letter from police station stating the good character of the applicant ad authenticating that the candidate is not involved in any criminal activity (the letter must not be issued before 3 months when submitting).

  • Proof of sustenance (in form of Bank statement or credit card statement, the applicant must show amount of 7000 euro in their account)

  • Medical Examination Certificate (the examination will be done in Cypriot Embassy’s chosen medical institutes in your country, the certificate must declare you clear from HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and Tuberculosis diseases).

  • Return Travel Ticket (Proving your intention to return back to your home country as soon as you complete your study programme in Cyprus).

  • Original Letter of Acceptance from Cypriot University’

You must submit the documents along with the visa fee, which will be between 15 and 30 euros. If you are granted the visa, you will make your travel arrangements and must bring all your original documents with you, as the immigration department in Cyprus will re-check your documents before allowing you to enter the land of Cyprus. Upon arrival in Cyprus, you must appear at the local police station nearest to your residence within 7 working days after your arrival in Cyprus and register your name.

Permanent Residency of Cyprus Requirements 2023 for International Students

A third country national who has resided continuously on legal residence permits in Cyprus for the past 5 years may apply for permanent residency of Cyprus. If the applicant has married a Cypriot national, they may apply for permanent residence after 3 years of continuous stay. Candidates will be required to provide evidence of sustainable means of subsistence, accommodation that is adequate for the applicant’s family, proof of legal residence, including visa stamps and residence permits issued to the applicant in the past 5 years, and a clean criminal record of his or her stay in Cyprus.

Part Time Work Permission in Cyprus 2023 for Students:

Since Cyprus is a member of the European Union, it complies with directives of its Member States. Recently, the Cypriot authorities have granted third country nationals the right to work in Cyprus as part-time workers if they are in full-time study programme. However, the permission comes with limitations on job areas and terms. The students will be allowed to work once they complete 6 months of stay in Cyprus. After that, they will be able to work as long as they have found employment and if their employer is prepared to file employment contract application for them at Labor Department. Currently, third country nationals are only allowed to work in Cyprus for 20 hours per week at petrol stations and fast food delivery. They are also allowed to work as caregivers at home and as car wash attendants.

Post Graduation Work Permits in Cyprus

After graduation from Cyprus, students are required to leave Cyprus within 60 days after obtaining their degrees. Post graduation work in Cyprus is required for students who have obtained an employment contract or have a certain amount of money to invest in Cyprus for property or business. If a student has obtained an employment contract from a Cyprus based company, the employer will provide work permit on the student’s behalf. The employer will send the invitation letter and the employment contract to the student in the home country. Language Requirements

In Cyprus English Proficiency Test Certificate such as IELTS, TOEFL are not a compulsory requirement to prove command over English language. The applicants who are not native of an English speaking country can either prove their proficiency in English language through IELTS or TOEFL test or take University’s English Placement Test (EPT) after arriving in Cyprus. If in the Cyprus University’s English Placement Test (EPT) the applicant fails to prove proficiency in language or fails to attain required passing grade they will be offered to take an additional course of English language in Cyprus along with their other study programme. The required scores required in IELTS or TOEFL or University’s English Placement Test (EPT) are as follows:

The application form will be accepted only if you pay application fee which will be around 53 Euros. The admission application fee is non-refundable. All the documents you submit must be translated in English language. For online application the universities accept photocopies of your documents and academic transcripts but on arrival in Cyprus the original documents will be submitted at your hosting university’s registrar office.

Admission Deadlines in Cyprus Universities 2023 for International Students

For summer semester admissions: the applications must be submitted till 15th of April

For fall semester admissions: the applications must be submitted till 31st of July

For spring semester admissions: the applications must be submitted till 30th November.

Acceptance Letter

The university will send you an acceptance if you meet their academic eligibility for admissions. The acceptance letter is an offer from your hosting university inviting you to study in Cyprus in their campus. If you accept the offer and confirm your seat in the university the university will ask you to submit visa documents if you want your university to apply for visa on your behalf. Your hosting will submit student visa request in Cyprus at the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cyprus Migration Office for approval. If the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cyprus Migration Office approves the application, a Temporary Student Visa is issued to successful candidate. The students will arrive in Cyprus on Temporary Student Visa and pay tuition fee, registration fee and fulfill other requirements such as documents attestations. After payments and documents attestation you will be issued a Temporary Residence Permit (Pink Slip). Tourist visas are issued by all diplomatic missions (Embassies, General Consulates, etc.) and all the Honorable Consulates abroad in the Republic of Cyprus. They are valid for a maximum of three months. The term “final” visa can be extended by the Foreign Ministry only when there are special circumstances (e.g., humanitarian reasons, property holders in Cyprus, etc.).

If third country nationals are issued a visa by a consular authority in Cyprus and the purpose of the visa application is to extend the stay of the foreign national, the term FINAL will not be recorded and the civil registry and migration department of Cyprus will be able to accept the ‘MVIS3’ application after all the necessary documents, duly certified, have been submitted.

What is an Asylum seeker?

A person who has escaped from their country of origin and is applying for recognition and protection as a refugee in Cyprus. Their application is still pending. If their application is rejected, they will have to leave the country voluntarily or face expulsion.

Can a Refugee study at the University of Cyprus?

Yes, they may attend UCY. Resettled refugees are permanent residents on arrival and have all the rights of other permanent residents.

Can Refugees work in Cyprus?

Under the Cyprus Refugee Act, once you’re recognised as a “refugee” or “subsidiary protection”, you’ll be able to apply for employment as soon as your status is approved. There’s no restriction on working in a certain industry or profession.

Is the entry permit visa application fee refundable?

No, visa fees once submitted to the Migration Department is non-refundable.

When should I start making travel arrangements?

We strongly recommend not to book your flight until you have received the Visa/Blue Slip. Before booking your flight, you should also check the latest travel policies of your own government for any restrictions about leaving (and returning to) your country. Be aware that as long as there are travel restrictions in place, the availability of flights to and from Cyprus may be limited. What is more, in order to support the containment of COVID-19 in Cyprus, all inbound passengers are required to present a ‘flight pass’ to fly prior to boarding.

Passengers, with nationality of third countries, travelling to the Republic of Cyprus from a country not included in Categories Green, Orange, Red are required to obtain beforehand a special permit as defined by the Infectious Diseases (Determination of Measures to Prevent the Spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus) Decree (No. 9) of 2021, as amended for the time being. Where can I certify my documents in my home country for the entry permit visa purposes?

Each document has its own verification formalities hence attestation varies depending upon each certificate. Most of the countries follow the below verification process as standard procedure: Home Ministry verification / Foreign Affairs verification / Embassy Attestation and finally Ministry of Foreign Affairs Attestation from the foreign country. However, the process may vary depending on the document and the laws of the origin and destination country.

Can I apply for my visa even though I can’t travel to Cyprus yet?

You can apply for an entry permit visa even though you cannot travel to Cyprus yet due to the covid-19 restrictions.  This means that students/staff can travel as soon as borders re-open and it is safe to do so.

When should I apply for my entry permit visa?

You can only apply for your entry permit visa once you have been accepted to study/work at the University of Cyprus. We will then provide you with an admission/employment letter and with an email explaining you the visa procedure.

I am a third country national with a valid European permit card. Can I enter Cyprus without obtaining a visa?

If you are a Researcher you are allowed to enter Cyprus without obtaining an entry permit visa. You can enter as a tourist/visitor and when coming in Cyprus you must apply for the residence permit visa application to the Migration Department.

If you are a Student then an entry permit visa is required to enter Cyprus.

I can’t find accommodation. What should I do?

Do EU citizens require an entry permit visa for entry to Cyprus?

EU citizens do not need a visa to enter Cyprus, but they must have a valid passport (which must be valid until the date of departure from Cyprus) or their national ID card (provided there is a photo on the card and citizenship is declared). The application for a Registration Certificate is made by the EU citizen and his/her family members, who are also nationals of another Member State, within 4 months of their entry into the Republic of Cyprus.

Can I enter Cyprus with a Schengen visa?

Cyprus is not yet a part of the Schengen area, however, individuals who possess a valid dual Schengen visa or multiple Schengen visa can travel to, stay in and transit through Cyprus for tourism purposes without the requirement of an additional visa.

I am going to stay only for a short-time period. What do you suggest?

The nationals of many non-EU countries do not require a visa to enter Cyprus for a stay not exceeding three months. Details of visa-exempt countries and visa application procedures are available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website  https://mfa.gov.cy/

What is a residence permit card/pink slip?

The Cyprus Temporary Residence Permit, commonly referred to as the Pink Slip, permits Non-EU passport holders to remain in Cyprus for a period of more than 90 days. It will also allow tourists and visitors to remain in Cyprus regardless of the length of their original visa. It is recommended that applicants apply prior to the expiry date of their current visa.

The visa guidance states I need to submit the Application Form M61 to the International Students and Staff Support Office and provide the Migration Department with my biometrics, within 10 days of arrival in Cyprus, but I need to quarantine for 14 days

You will be able to prepare your residence permit card documents and submit them to the International Students and Staff Support Office after you have completed your quarantine period. The International Students and Staff Support Office  will provide the M61 application form and all necessary documentation to the Migration Department. Upon the evaluation of the application, an appointment will be scheduled for the Migration Department for the purpose of biometric recognition and payment.

If a student/staff is awaiting the outcome of their residence permit visa issuance/renewal, can they depart Cyprus?

We advise the student/staff to stay in Cyprus while they wait for their visa to be confirmed. If they wish to return home, they may use the Receipt provided by Migration Department. If they are required to travel to another European Union country, they should contact the Embassy of that country in Cyprus for assistance.

Will I be able to travel outside of the Republic of Cyprus on my residence permit visa?

If you wish to go to another country for a study trip or holiday, you should contact that country’s embassy in Cyprus to find out if you need a visa and how to apply. However, your pink slip will be cancelled if you’re absent from Cyprus for more than 3 consecutive months.

Will there be any consequences if an International student/Researcher remains in Cyprus after their visa has expired?

Yes, it’s illegal for an international student/Researcher to overstay their visa. This is usually seen when they leave Cyprus and go through passport control, where their passport and visa are checked. If they’re found to have overstayed their visa, they’ll be declared undesirable and won’t be allowed to return to Cyprus until a certain time has passed.

My pink slip will expire shortly. How can I renew it and when shall I apply for the renewal of my residence permit?

Pink Slip in Cyprus is valid for 1 year and can be renewed on an annual basis. You shall submit the application for renewing your residence permit at least one (1) month before the expiry of the residence permit you are holding.

How long will the examination of my application for a residence permit take?

The Cyprus Civil Registry and Migration Department is responsible for issuing residence permit cards. The examination of an application for a residence permit depends on the category of residence and the complexity of the application. According to the legislation in force applications are examined: (1) employment – within four months, (2) family reunification of a third country national – within nine months, (3) long-term residents – within twelve months, (4) students – within three months.

From where will I will receive my residence permit?

The International Students and Staff Support Office will inform you when your residence permit card is ready to collect it from them.

Can I enter Cyprus as a tourist and then transform my visa to a student’s visa?

If you enter Cyprus on a tourist visa, this cannot be changed to a study visa once you’re here. Tourist visas only allow you to legally enter and remain in Cyprus for up to 90 days.

How can I invite a third country national to Cyprus?

When a third country national is invited in Cyprus for tourist reasons, the assumption for responsibility of hosting form is completed  and submitted along with a bank guarantee (€855 for Asian Countries, €515 for Eastern Europe Countries and €340 for Middle East Countries) and a copy of the foreigner’s passport.

Can the University help me speed up my residence permit card application?

The International Students and Staff Support Office is always in communication with the Migration Department and ready to provide assistance to all International Students and Staff, so as to minimise the processes and address any obstacles that may arise. However, the Migration Department is a governmental department and its procedures are independent of the University of Cyprus.

I am a student. Can I bring my spouse with me in Cyprus?

Unfortunately, no. Under Cypriot law, you cannot bring your spouse on a dependent visa if you are a student. Cyprus does not accept the dependent visa for international students.

I am a Researcher. Can I bring my spouse with me in Cyprus?

As a non-EU researcher, you can bring your family to Cyprus. However, your spouse must have a tourist visa issued by the Cyprus embassy/general consulate in their country in order to enter Cyprus with you. Once you enter Cyprus, you will need to submit your residence permit visa papers to Migration Department as Researcher’s dependants.

Primarily, you must reside in the areas that are controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.  If you are a resident of the government-controlled areas you are a GHS beneficiary if a) you are employed, or b) you have acquired permanent residence status, or c) you have been granted refugee or supplementary protection status, or d) you are a member of the family of a beneficiary or e) you are insured in another EU Member State.
