Admissions Requirements of Chinese Universities for Students

Chinese universities offer English taught and Chinese taught study programmes and the admission requirements of each of the university will be different from another. The academic level and study program you choose will have exclusive requirements. In general, the admission requirements of each of study program in Chinese universities include age limit, academic requirements, language proficiency, entrance examinations and minimum grades requirement

  • For admission in under graduate program the applicant must be under 25 years of age, hold a high school diploma in good grades from a renowned institution of his country, your chosen university in China will take assessment examination for admission (depends on the university’s rules).
  • For admission in post graduate Masters the applicant must be under 35 years of age, hold a Bachelors degree in good grades from recognized institution of his country, entrance examination will be taken, recommendation letters from two of applicant’s professors will be required.
  • For admission in post graduate PhD program the applicant must be underv40 years of age, hold a Masters degree in good grades from renowned institution of his country, entrance examination will be taken, research proposal and recommendation letters will be required.

For Students Visa Requirements of China

You will receive an offer letter after having fulfilled the admission requirements and securing a seat in Chinese University. The next step is to visit Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your country nearest to you and attain student visa of China information first hand. You will receive a student visa application and list of required documents to submit along with application at the Embassy. There are two student visa types based on the duration of your study program. The X1 visa is for study programmes longer than 6 months and X2 visa for study programmes lesser than 6 months duration. The applicant will pay 600 USD fee for visa application and submit following documents:

  • Valid Passport
  • Offer Letter of Hosting Chinese University
  • Medical Examination Certificate
  • Language Proficiency Test Certificate
  • Completed Visa Application

You must apply for student visa and submit the visa application and required documents one month before your study program commences in China. You can expect your student visa process to be completed within a week or two. Upon arriving in China, within 30 days you will apply for temporary resident permit of China which will remain valid till your study program duration. You will apply for temporary resident permit at local Public Security Bureau (PBS).

Permanent Residency of China Requirements for Students

The pathway to permanent residency of China begins with points based immigration system. Post graduation from China the students can apply for Tier A, Tier B or Tier C visa each having different qualification and professional requirements and visa validity. The PhD degree holders get 20 points, Masters Degree holders 15 and Bachelors degree holders 10, three to six months of work experience in China has 5 points, six to nine months 10 points and over nine months 15 points. For 18 to 25 years age 10 points, 26 to 45 years age 15 points and 46 to 55 10 points. There are extra 5 points for qualification gained from world recognized institute. After gaining any of TIER visa type you can have working experience in China and apply for permanent residency of China or D type visa after 5 years of residing in China. The permanent residency visa allows candidate to live in China for 10 years more and independence to exit and enter the country whenever they want and also invite their family to live with them in China.)

Study and Living Expenses in China

China’s affordable living and study expenses are the main reason behind its popularity among international students. The cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are expensive than others but top ranking universities of China are located there. A student can expect his/her monthly expenses of living in Beijing to be around 1,000 to 1,200 USD and in Shanghai it will be around 850 to 1,200 USD. In rural areas and less popular cities of China your monthly expenses may range between 600 – 1,000 USD.

Study Expenses:

On average, (for English taught Study Programmes) the under graduate programme fee in public universities of China will cost 2200-5000 USD/year. For post graduate Masters Programme the tuition fee in public universities will be 2500-6000 USD /year. For post graduate PhD Programme fee will range between 3000-7000 USD/year.

The tuition fee in Chinese private universities and branch campuses of international universities will be higher than public universities. The average tuition fee for a full time study program will start from 8,000 USD/year to 15,000 USD/year.

Living Expenses:

The rent of accommodation depends on the city and area you choose to live in China. Halls of residence are the cheap cost option and off campus residency will be costly and the bills will not be included in the monthly rents. On average you can expect the monthly rent of halls of residence to be around 150 USD per month and rent of a private flat to be around 550 USD per month.

Food:

In China, the food expenses are quite affordable. A basic menu meal in a restaurant for one person will cost 3.71 USD. Academic Requirements for Students to Get Admission in Chines Universities

The academic requirements for each of study program in China will be different. There are age limits set by Chinese institutions for each of academic level and there are minimum grades set for admission. The Age Requirements for each of academic level set by Chinese institutions are as follows:

  • For admission in under graduate study programme, the age of applicant must be under 25 years.
  • For admission in post graduate study programme (Masters), the age limit of applicant must be under 35 years
  • For admission in post graduate study programme (PhD), the age limit of applicant must be under 40 years.

Academic Requirements:

  • For admission in Under Graduate programme, the applicant must have passed a High School Diploma or equivalent (A-Level) from a recognized institution of his country. Your chosen Chinese institution might take an entrance exam to assess your capabilities and passing that entrance exam in good grades will ascertain your admission. The GCSE holders are not granted admission in Chinese universities for under graduate courses; they will have to take admission in foundation course of 1 year duration first before taking admission in Under Graduate study programme.
  • For admission in post graduate (Masters) programme, the applicants must have passed Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of their country in good grades. Passing an entrance exam is also compulsion for admission in many Chinese Universities that you will have to ascertain before choosing the university in China. The applicant will also be needed to provide two recommendation letters from two of his/her professors.
  • For admission in post graduate (PhD) programme, the applicants must have passed Masters Degree from a recognized institute of his/her country in good grades. Two recommendation letters from his/her professors will be required. The Chinese Institution you choose for study might also take an entrance exam which you will have to pass in good grades.

Language Requirements

Chinese language is medium of instruction in all of the Chinese Universities. However, many of Chinese universities are offering study programmes in English language which you must ascertain before selecting a study programme. Even if you choose a study program in English, some command over Chinese language will be required for living in China and you will learn it eventually while your stay there. For admission in Under Graduate or Post Graduate courses, the English Proficiency Test Certificates accepted by Chinese Universities are IELTS and TOEFL and for admission in study programmes with Chinese as medium of instruction you will have to pass Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) test. There are three difficulty levels of Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) test which include primary, medium level and advanced level. The level required in Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) test depends on your study programme and academic level and you will prepare for it accordingly. For example for Science, Engineering and IT Courses in Chinese Language, HSK Elementary Test will be required and for Liberal Arts, Economics and Management Courses in Chinese Language HSK Intermediate Test will be required.

Method of Application

International student can apply for admission directly at their chosen Chinese university through their website or they can choose any of the following two methods of application:

  • CUCAS Application Method: – CUCAS is an online application platform which serves as mediator between applicants and Chinese Universities for admissions. By using CUCAS application method you can apply at your chosen Chinese University.
  • CUAC Application Method: – CUAC aka China University Application Centre is also an online platform working as a mediator between Chinese University and international students. CUAC is also provides professional guidance regarding course selection in Chinese Universities to applicants.

Submitting Required Documents

The documents required may vary from university to university in China and also depends on your study level and study program. For international students the required documents are corresponded with visa documents and national identity of international students. In general, the following documents are required by all of Chinese Universities for admissions to international students:

  • 2 recent passport size photographs of applicant
  • A photocopy of applicant’s valid national passport
  • Photocopy of National Identity Card
  • Health Certificate (proving the applicant is in good health)
  • Clearance letter from local police station proving the applicant has good character and has no criminal offence registered against him
  • Language proficiency test certificate (for English taught courses IELTS and TOEFL for Chinese language taught courses HSK)
  • A letter of guarantee( signed by the guardian or parents of the applicant stating that the applicant will abide all the rules and regulations of Chinese government during his stay in China and stating that the guardian take responsibility of the actions of the applicant)
  • Proof of Financial Resources for your education and stay in China
  • Transcripts of your academic records, diplomas  and certificates
  • Recommendation letters from two of applicant’s professors (for post graduate courses)
  • You must meet age requirement if the course
  • Letter of intent (written by applicant stating why he has chosen certain study programme and explaining his/her professional aspirations)

Admission Submission Deadlines

In China, the academic year is split into two semesters namely spring semester and autumn semester. Some of the universities in China also implement three semester admission schedule. It is better to ascertain the admission deadlines of your chosen Chinese university before planning your admission schedule.  But generally, the admission submission deadlines of most of Chinese Universities have following schedule:

  • For admission in spring semester the application must be submitted till 15th of July
  • For admission in autumn semester the application must be submitted till 30th of April

Waiting for Admission Approval

After submitting the required documents and admission form you can expect the admission process to take 30 to 40 days. If your application gets approved by Chinese university they will send you an acceptance letter or offer letter for admission. You will be asked to pay tuition fee and from there your student visa process will commence.
